FWB Vikings

The Fort Walton Beach High School Viking Band has been honored with an invitation to perform at the 2024 Go Bowling Military Bowl, marking the first time the band has participated in a major national bowl game since 1989. The game will be held on December 28, 2024, at 5:45 p.m. at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland, and will be televised live on ESPN. The 145-member Viking Band will showcase their talents during the Military Bowl Parade, perform the Star-Spangled Banner before the game, and participate in a concert festival with their symphonic band. This opportunity is significant for the band program, which has proudly represented Fort Walton Beach for 54 years.

"We are incredibly excited and honored for the Fort Walton Beach Viking Band to perform at the Military Bowl in December," said Fort Walton Beach High School Principal Lindsey Smith. "Coming from a proud military community, this opportunity means so much to our students, our school, and the entire community. It's a privilege to represent Fort Walton Beach on a national stage and showcase our talented band while celebrating our deep connection to the military."

Band Director Derek Fields emphasized the importance of this experience for the students, reflecting on the band's rich history of excellence. "This standard of excellence was set here long ago, and we're committed to continuing that legacy. It means everything to give these students the opportunity to perform on such a large stage," Fields said. "It's an honor to continue this tradition and ensure our students experience something truly unforgettable."

For seniors like Bailey Maris and Jameson Dewrell, the opportunity to perform at the Military Bowl represents the high point of their hard work and dedication as Viking band members. "It's a big honor to be picked for this parade," said Maris, who follows in her parents' footsteps, both former Viking Band members. "Getting to experience the parade and meeting other bands is exciting, especially for those of us in color guard." Dewrell, a member of the drumline, shared his excitement: "I've always dreamed of being part of one of those big parades you see on TV. Now, it's happening!"

The trip is estimated to cost around $130,000, and the band is actively raising funds through community initiatives. The Fort Walton Beach Viking Band will depart on December 30 and return on January 3. With 95% of the band members committed to going, they are eagerly preparing for what promises to be a memorable and rewarding performance at the Military Bowl.
